25 July 2008South African automotive paint manufacturer ChemSpec has secured export orders for its premium automotive refinish, Metalux 2, to the Mauritian and Chinese markets. The Mauritian order is worth R1-million and is the first from that country, while the Chinese order is the company’s second from the Asian economic giant. In addition, ChemSpec – which is headquartered in Veralum, KwaZulu-Natal – has entered into discussions with a multi-billion dollar company based in South East Asia, to partner it in the distribution of its water-based automotive refinish product, Hydrolux, into that region.“Hydrolux testing will commence in August, with trial runs scheduled for October and a full launch planned for December of this year,” the company said in a statement this week, adding that it already has well developed distribution channels into the automotive industry in South East Asia through its other product offerings.Global expansionThe move is in accordance with the company’s strategy to expand its product offerings into the global market and grow its international presence. The company last year purchased paintmaker Montana Products, based in Ohio, USA, along with its manufacturing and research and development facilities.“It will also contribute towards the consolidation of ChemSpec’s market leading export position in the South African coatings sector and encourage further expansion of the company’s international footprint,” read the statement.“ChemSpec will take advantage of its established and effective distribution structure to successfully market the range of automotive refinish products and will continue to look for new avenues abroad.”The company presently manufactures its automotive refinish products in both South Africa and the US.SAinfo reporter Would you like to use this article in your publicationor on your website?See: Using SAinfo material

Completed in July, the residential project Lopez Common Ground, on an island off the Washington coast, has been attracting attention as a low-impact development that could serve as a model for other projects aiming to combine energy efficiency, sustainability, and affordability. The relatively steep rise in real estate costs in San Juan County, which includes Lopez Island, home to the Common Ground development, was one of the driving forces in the project’s evolution. To diminish the effects of land-cost speculation on the project, ownership of the seven acres of land for the 11-home development – which features straw bale and earthen plaster construction, rainwater catchment, solar hot water, and a 33.8-kW solar power system – is retained by the developer, Lopez Community Land Trust. LCLT also has three other affordable-housing developments on the island.(One LCLT affordable-housing project was featured in a Taunton Press book, published in 2000, titled The New Cottage Home, by Jim Tolpin.)Seattle-based design and architecture firm Mithun, which has collaborated with other organizations on affordable-housing projects, provided planning and architecture services for Common Ground. As noted in a recent Jetson Green post, the total project cost including the land was $3.5 million (the LCLT headquarters building also is on the site) – less than $320,000 in acquisition and construction costs per home.Mithun tried to maximize solar exposure on the south side of each house. The straw bale walls, meanwhile, were installed on the north, west, and east sides to insulate interiors from the winds that batter the island during the cold season. Lopez Island, whose resident population is about 2,200, also gets about 25 inches of rain annually, which makes the rain catchment system an key source of water for the community’s toilets, washing machines, and garden irrigation. Each of the homes’ electric and water meters are easily visible, allowing the homeowners to gauge their progress toward maximum energy and water efficiency. We’ll have a better sense of the overall performance of the community by this time next year.
This article is only available to GBA Prime Members For decades, designers and builders of wood-framed homes didn’t spend much time thinking about insulation. The usual approach — still followed in much of the U.S. — was to fill the stud bays with fiberglass batts, and, once the ceiling drywall was installed, to unroll some fiberglass insulation in the attic.Because of this decades-long legacy, it’s not unusual for a designer, builder, or homeowner to post the following question on Green Building Advisor: “We just finished framing, installing windows, and roofing. Now we have a few questions about the best way to insulate.”My usual reaction is, “Really? You’re asking now?” These decisions need to be made early In many cases, these insulation questions are posted a few weeks too late. Why?Why would builders leave these decisions to the last minute? Well, some builders think, “We’ll either fill the stud bays with fiberglass batts — or, if the homeowner wants to pay for an upgrade, we’ll just use spray foam.” The trouble with that approach is that a wall with insulation between the studs has a lot of thermal bridging through the framing. If you care about this thermal bridging, you really need to include exterior rigid foam insulation or exterior mineral wool insulation — or frame a double-stud wall.So this important decision — about how to address thermal bridging — has to be made at the design stage, before the walls are framed. You have to plan ahead for roof insulation, too In most climates, cathedral ceilings are also best insulated with exterior rigid foam. But the decision to install rigid foam has to be made before the roofing is installed.True, it’s possible to thoroughly insulate a cathedral… Start Free Trial Already a member? ABC3160 ESPN3103 On Monday night the most anticipated NBA game of the year was played between the San Antonio Spurs and the Golden State Warriors. Did you get a chance to watch it? No? You don’t have NBA TV, the peculiar channel that the NBA usually dumps its trash games onto? Damn shame, it was a lot of fun.Why on earth the best game of the year was on a network available in less than half of households with a television in them is a pretty good question! The NBA has deals with ESPN (in 81 percent of homes with a TV, also where I work), TNT (about 82 percent coverage) and ABC (you probably have ABC). In fairness, the schedule of the year’s nationally televised games is released way before the season starts, and it’s possible that a game between two of the best teams in the league was missed by the other carriers or simply couldn’t be crammed into one of the marquee network nights. Nationally televised games also tend to err on the side of featuring teams from major media markets rather than legitimately good basketball — this is why a wretched Lakers team parading around the mummified Kobe Bryant had, at the beginning of the season, 19 national games, tied for seventh in the league.Still, it got us wondering: NBA TV does suck, right? It’s not just in our head? It isn’t just a cheap joke about quarantining the Nets-Hawks playoff series in the farthest hinterlands on hand? TNT3133 NETWORKAVG. COMBINED ELO OF MATCHUP NBA TV3038 Yeah, it’s not in our heads. Games on NBA TV are of a lower quality by Elo than those on other networks. And that’s with those other guys eating an unfair share of Kobe this year, and a commensurate number of awful Lakers games the past two years.I pulled as many television schedules going back to the 2011-12 season1I used the Wayback Machine to get the schedules from 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16. Because of incomplete coverage, it’s possible I missed a few televised games relevant to our set. However, I pulled about as many games as expected based on contracts going back, so the effect would be minor. as I could. I cleaned the data2Stop announcing things in PDFs, people. Also, that 2011 lockout has a habit of showing up and making me furious out of nowhere. and linked it up to the data from our NBA Elo interactive. Combining the Elo scores of the teams gives us a broad look at the game quality. Higher numbers mean the average team quality is higher in the matchup.3Elo is especially useful here because one of its characteristics is using past performance to inform a team’s current strength; this is handy for the model, but for our purposes also doubles as a proxy for how long a team has been relevant and presumably in demand. This means a matchup between a great team and a mediocre team could score about the same as two decent teams facing each other. I consider those both good outcomes, with two sucky teams playing as a bad outcome. The heuristic isn’t perfect, but bear with me.The difference between a game on ABC and NBA TV is 122 points. For some perspective, that’s roughly the difference between watching your team play the 53-29 Clippers and watching it mud wrestle the 45-37 Grizzlies. But even more, it’s not totally clear that the NBA is good at figuring out which of its basketball games are ripe for a national audience!Monday’s game between the Warriors (an 1809 Elo rating going in) and Spurs (1782) was, needless to say, an outlier. The average team Elo in the whole set — comprising both nationally televised games and the League Pass refuse — for the period we’re looking at is 1511. So we can say a matchup between two totally average teams would have roughly the combined matchup Elo of 3022. The games on NBA TV were at a 3038, just barely better than what a dude who knows nothing about basketball would pick randomly.I have seen a vision of hell, and it is a network where the only respite from watching Grizzlies-Pelicans ad infinitum is an occasional D-League game.
