Press freedom activist hospitalised since being mistreated in Baku police station

first_imgNews Follow the news on Azerbaijan RSF calls for a fully transparent investigation after mine kills two journalists in Azerbaijan June 20, 2008 – Updated on January 20, 2016 Press freedom activist hospitalised since being mistreated in Baku police station AzerbaijanEurope – Central Asia Organisation RSF_en Reporters Without Borders condemns the physical and psychological mistreatment that journalist Emin Huseynov, the head of the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS), received at the hands of the police in a Baku police station on 14 June after being arrested while covering an event marking the 80th anniversary of the birth of Argentine revolutionary Che Guevara. He lost consciousness after leaving the police station and was hospitalised in a disturbing condition. The authorities deny that he was mistreated.“We extend our full support to Huseynov and we deplore the attitude of the authorities who, despite all the evidence, insist that he was not mistreated,” Reporters Without Borders said. “We urge the judicial authorities to carry out an investigation and to ensure that Huseynov receives appropriate medical treatment.”Huseynov and two IRFS researchers, Rasim Aliyev and Mirrehim Hasanov, went to cover the activity organised by the Che Guevara Fan Club in Baku’s Alaturka café. The participants and journalists were waiting for a Cuban embassy representative to arrive when the police raided the café, arrested around 20 of the 25 people present, and took them to a police station.Huseynov was separated from the others at the police station when he objected to their being photographed and fingerprinted. Aliyev said he saw four plain-clothes police take Huseynov off to a room and then he heard cries, insults and other noises from the other side of the door. One of the men threatened to kill Huseynov. Then Huseynov left the police station and lost consciousness after asking a colleague to call an ambulance.Reporters Without Borders learned today that Huseynov is still hospitalised but is not getting appropriate treatment for the pain he is suffering in the head and the back of the neck because doctors only diagnosed shock.Ehsan Zahidov, an interior ministry representative insisted that Huseynov was not subjected to any violence in the police station. The police have claimed that he hit himself. “The conclusions of the police are absurd,” Huseynov said. “This is a favourite method of our police. When police hit journalist Uzeir Jafarov on the head last year, they claimed that he hit himself.”Huseynov was previously arrested for two hours while covering a protest outside the presidential administration buildings on 12 June. That’s progress but it’s not enough progress,” Mr Bruton said. “We need to do more in this space and that’s why, for example, between the various departments we have put €2.5bn of new funding available to small and medium enterprises.” The CSO report showed that long-term unemployment remains a serious issue with 197,508 people signing on for a year or more – almost half the the total. Legislature Funds Two Projects to Enhance Art, Education, and Economic Development…

first_imgFacebook124Tweet0Pin0Submitted by City of YelmThe Yelm community will see the iconic Water Tower come back to life as 125-foot-tall art piece that stands over the center of town and — at the same time — the City will start the beginning stages of developing a South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) satellite branch and business incubator space, thanks to grant funding through the Washington State Legislature. The City of Yelm Water Tower wil be brought back to life. Photo courtesy: City of Yelm“We are grateful for our legislators who worked with us to find the most appropriate funding source in the final budget adopted by the Legislature,” City Administrator Michael Grayum said. “Both of these community projects are important for preserving Yelm’s past and building our future.”The State allocated $200,000 in the 2019-2021 Capital Budget to fund the conceptual building design, architectural renderings, community engagement, and cost estimate for a multi-story, mixed-use community building to serve as a business incubator to serve rural parts of Thurston and Pierce counties.“This project builds on the collaboration and partnership between the City, Yelm Community Schools, and SPSCC to help young people and adults complete their education and have the necessary tools to be successful in the workplace,” City Administrator Michael Grayum said. The City has made it a priority to improve public infrastructure and create new services for the Yelm community, most notably purchasing an existing building to revitalize Yelm City Hall along with the purchase of an adjacent half-acre of commercial property. Since the purchase, Councilmembers Colt, Stillwell, and Wood have been working with City staff and regional partners to explore developing the property into a dedicated space that provides education, training, and technology to catalyze the startup and expansion of small business enterprises and support underserved populations.“Ever since we purchased the land, we have been wanting to utilize it in a way that benefits our community,” Councilmember Colt said. “Creating an innovative education service center is a way for us to invest in our citizens in multiple ways — providing a dedicated space for secondary education, technology training, and breaking down barriers local businesses face to continue strengthening our local economy.”The Washington State Capital Budget also appropriated $300,000 to a separate non-profit organization to restore Yelm’s water tower, in addition to the more than $150,000 the legislature previously dedicated to the project in the previous budget. The decommissioned tower was put on the state Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation in 2017 and is maintained by “Save the Yelm Water Tower,” the nonprofit who advocated for and received the state funding. The organization imagines the tower being lit by LED lighting that will have an array of different features and colors to coincide with the holidays and other special events.“I’m thrilled that “Save the Yelm Water Tower” was able to apply for and receive nearly half-a-million dollars to fund the water tower restoration project,” Councilmember EJ Curry said. “It’s going to be beautiful when it’s done — with those colorful lights and the landscaping we are planning to have. That historic tower will be a community asset forever.”last_img read more

Airports Company secures R1.5bn loan

first_img30 January 2009Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) has secured a R1.5-billion loan facility from the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) to fund its airport infrastructure development programme.Acsa treasurer Phetolo Ramosebudi said that worsening domestic and global macroeconomic conditions had lead to a weakening in the domestic bond market, forcing the company to diversify its sources of funding.“We have approached a number of financial institutions and we are pleased that the DBSA agreed to partner with us,” he said in a statement this week.“The loan will go a long way toward meeting Acsa’s funding requirements. Discussions with other institutions are continuing.”DBSA divisional executive Bethuel Netshiswinzhe said the project signified the bank’s commitment to contribute toward the development of economic infrastructure, which was needed for further growth and development in the country.“We are delighted to be part of this expansion programme, designed to increase the capacity of our airports and to meet the expectations of the travelling public, [as well as] thousands of soccer loving fans expected to descend on our shores for the 2010 World Cup,” he said.Capital expansion programmeAcsa is in the midst of a five-year, R22-billion capital expansion programme, extending till 2012, to expand capacity at its network of 10 airports around the country in the run-up to the 2010 Fifa World Cup and beyond.By August 2008, the company had spent over R5.2-billion on airport improvements over the course of the financial year. This sum included upgrades and new developments worth R1.7-billion at OR Tambo International Airport outside Johannesburg, R603-million on Cape Town International Airport and R298-million on smaller domestic airports countrywide. In addition, R1.9-billion was allocated for upgrades at Durban International Airport as well as the greenfields international airport development at La Mercy to the north of Durban.September 2008 also saw the opening of OR Tambo International Airport’s R2.3-billion central terminal building, which has over 18 000 square metres of space and features a larger international arrivals hall, as well as retail facilities including a post office, cellular phone shops, foreign exchange services and various eateries.SAinfo reporter Would you like to use this article in your publicationor on your website?See: Using SAinfo materiallast_img read more

Tough RWC pool for Springbok Women

first_img1 November 2013South Africa will face Wales, France and Australia at the 2014 IRB Women’s Rugby World Cup in France after being named in Pool C at the official draw in Paris on Wednesday. The competition, which runs from 1 to 17 August 2014, will feature 12 teams drawn in three pools. With Australia ranked in the top three of the women’s rugby world rankings, and France and Wales respectively a few places below them, the Springbok Women’s side will enter the tournament as the lowest ranked team in Pool C.Record-breaking victoryThe Springbok Women qualified for the 2014 Rugby World Cup in September with a record-breaking 63-3 victory over Uganda in East London, which was the biggest victory in the history of the women’s national team.Next year’s appearance at the international showpiece will mark the Springbok Women’s third successive Rugby World Cup finals appearance.Australia and Wales were drawn in the same pool as South Africa in the 2010 Women’s Rugby World Cup in England, and the team defeated the Welsh 15-10 in their second pool match. Wales, however, emerged victorious in the second outing between the teams in the ninth and 10th place playoff later in the tournament.SatisfiedSpringbok Women’s captain Mandisa Williams was satisfied with the draw, although she admitted that her team would have to be in top form as Australia, France and Wales are quality sides.“There will never be an easy draw at a Rugby World Cup, so we are satisfied with our pool, although we know it is going to be a challenging competition,” said Williams.“We defeated Wales in the round-robin stages of the last World Cup, but just as we have developed as a team, so have all the other sides participating in the spectacle, so we will not take anything for granted.”Creating upsetsAfter progressing from a 12th place finish in their first World Cup in Canada in 2006 to 10th place in the 2010 showpiece, Williams said she hoped that the increased international exposure the women have enjoyed since then would allow them to create a few upsets next year.“We have certainly developed as a team over the last few years and the fact that we have been exposed to more international rugby in the 15-a-side and Sevens codes has assisted in that regard,” she said. “But the hard work starts now. It is up to us to grow as a unit and be in the best possible form for the World Cup. Fortunately we have experienced senior players and talented youngsters coming through, so we have to make the most of this when we begin our preparations.”Defending Rugby World Cup champions New Zealand were drawn in Pool B with the USA, Ireland and Kazakhstan, while 2010 finalists England were named in Pool A with Canada, Spain and Samoa.‘Really exciting’Speaking after the draw at Hotel de Ville in Paris, IRB chairman Bernard Lapasset said: “This is a really exciting day for Women’s Rugby. We now know the pools for France 2014, and fans are going to see some really excellent matches.“The World Cup in 2010 saw a great standard of rugby, but I believe the matches next August will see an even greater level of intensity and skill. I wish all 12 teams the very best over the coming year as they prepare for this magnificent event.”SAinfo reporter and SA Rugbylast_img read more

first_imgOnePlus will launch its next flagship phone, the OnePlus 5, this summer, it has announced. On paper, that translates to around the June-July time-frame. The company has already started dropping in Easter eggs teasing the OnePlus 5. Only a few devices are left in our warehouse, so purchase yours before time runs out at”Now, do remember that OnePlus doesn’t use the word “discontinue” in its message. Highlighting on the same, a report coming from Phone Arena says, “We’ve just been informed that OnePlus 3T will be out of stock in the UK and the rest of Europe from June 1st.” This indicates that OnePlus 3T will be still available in India for a while now at least. Also Read: OnePlus 5 to be first phone with Snapdragon 835 processor in India, June launch almost confirmedThe Chinese smartphone vendor on its official Twitter handle says, “Almost out of stock! With graphically-demanding apps, for example, you’ll notice how fast they load and how well they run… We also wanted to improve the overall feeling of smoothness. Our engineers tested why scrolling occasionally differed between phones. There wasn’t a lot of precedent for them to work with – no benchmarks, no industry case studies to learn from. So we used a special high-speed camera to track screen movements and measure input speeds. As a result, apps respond quickly to your touch for a seamless user experience.”Apart from OnePlus, Qualcomm also confirmed that Snapdragon 835 would be inside the OnePlus 5. Qualcomm on Wednesday via its official Twitter handle shared a post which stated — #OnePlus5 is coming soon and we couldn’t be more excited that it’s powered by #Snapdragon 835. Coach Interview – Swain Rovelli

first_imgBe sure to use the hashtags #transtasman2016, #oneteam and #teamaustralia across all of our social media platforms and send in your messages of support for the teams on our social media channels.Related LinksSwain Rovelli Interview Facebook: – search for ‘TFAofficial’ We caught up with new Australian Women’s Open coach, Swain Rovelli this week in the lead up to the 2016 Trans Tasman Series. Join us as we hear about how much he is looking forward to the event next week, how he is finding his new role and who we should watch out for in the series. How much are you looking forward to next week? It’s very exciting, it’s been a short but good preparation and it’s good that it’s come around really quickly. I’m very excited to go over to New Zealand and get playing as soon as we can. How were your two camps earlier this month?Very good, the first one in Brisbane was good, we set up the team and got a lot done. The second one in Sydney was about finishing off and tidying up a few areas, both were extremely successful. They were thoroughly enjoyed by players and staff, we’ve done everything we could have to make sure we are ready to go. How have you found the Australian Women’s Open coaching role so far? It’s been really good, it’s a bit different as I’ve got two assistants, usually you are lucky to get an assistant, but with Mick(Moussa) and Craig (Morrow) and Kim (Solman), they are doing heaps which frees me up to take a back seat and be the head coach. It’s been good that you can focus on a few key areas. What are you looking forward to most about next week? The Japan games will be good but looking forward to seeing the team play game one, I can’t wait to get on the field. There is a really good feeling in the group, they know what they need to do and I just want to see the girls play the way they’ve trained, that’s the most exciting thing for me. Who has impressed you so far in the lead up and who should we watch out for?Laura Peattie has trained really well, Hannah Dyball and Kimmy Sue See are three I think will play really well, those three will be important to us. You’ve got a lot of young talent in your team, how important is the Australian Youth program for the Women’s Open team? The Youth program is very important for what we do in the Women’s program. It continues our production line of Women’s Open players, with that youth coming through it keeps us able to regenerate the side quickly. We’ve got seven debutants in the Women’s, Yasmin’s (Meakes) obviously played Mixed. Hayley Maddick is making her Australian debut at this event, how excited are you to see her play?I’m extremely excited, she’s followed a different path to everyone else really. It’s a good message to all players, that if you didn’t play (Australian) Youth your career isn’t over, if you persevere and sacrifice you can still make it, even if you didn’t play Youth. I really like the story of Hayley Maddick and how she’s got to where she is. She wasn’t one of those decorated juniors that made every state and Australian Youth team, she came through the hard way and has had to persevere to get where she is and that’s a good story for a lot of players that mature later and don’t learn about themselves until later on. Lizzie Campbell was announced as captain last week, how much are you looking forward to seeing her in this role?I’ve been fortunate enough to coach Lizzie for a while at club level and regional level. She’s an outstanding leader, I’m looking for her to do exactly the same thing (at Australian level). She is very insightful, team orientated, has a great heart towards the team and that’s one of the key reasons she got the captaincy. The way she leads the group and talks is a real positive for us and it’s good to go into the Trans Tasman with her as my captain. We’ll be keeping you up-to-date with all of the latest news, information and results from the 2016 Trans Tasman series on our website and social media channels, so you won’t miss any of the action:last_img read more
